Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) — also known as the immortal mushroom — is an underrated skin powerhouse. Its peptides, vitamins, minerals, terpenoids, phenolics, polysaccharides, and proteins make it rich in antioxidants and bioactive compounds that nourish and protect skin. While revered in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries, there’s plenty of modern in vitro, in vivo, and clinical studies to explain the 5 main skin benefits of resihi: 1. Antioxidant power Reishi mushrooms are packed with antioxidants, particularly ergothioneine and glutathione, which fight oxidative stress and protect against cellular damage. Alleviating environmental damage caused by free radicals can in turn reduce the appearance of lines and smooth the texture of skin. 2. Hyperpigmentation prevention Compounds in reishi mushrooms have been found to inhibit the melanin-producing enzyme tyrosinase, potentially reducing melanin production and preventing discoloration and hyperpigmentation. 4. Hydration and balanced pH A 2022 study demonstrated that the beta-glucans, flavonoids, and phenols in Ganoderma lucidum had a positive effect on pH level and hydration while reducing transepidermal water loss from the epidermis, supporting the skin barrier. 5. Enhanced immunity Bonus for eating reishi: The jury's still out on whether reishi offers immune support when applied topically, but there's definitely evidence that reishi boosts the immune system and helps regulate hormones when eaten. Today we're sharing about a little-known French botanist, Jeanne Baret (1740–1807), not only because our founder, Bridget May, is a botanist, but because we're cuckoo for plants AND for adventurous women. ⁠ ⁠ Determined to study botany but barred from joining an 18th-century scientific expedition due to her gender, Jeanne Baret disguised herself as a man and accompanied her partner, Philibert Commerçon, on a 3-year voyage to South America. She endured harsh conditions at sea and collected countless plant specimens, many of which were new to science. Baret is recognized as the first woman to have completed a voyage of circumnavigation of the globe.
